Microsoft Teams Application New Era or Teams 2.0

Microsoft announced its new Microsoft Teams Application which everyone is referring to as a New Era of Microsoft Teams Application or Microsoft Teams 2.0 version. Microsoft have been working on this application now for more than a year now and finally it was announced and launched at Enterprise Connect 2023.

Rish Tandon who previously worked at Microsoft was one of person who pioneered the idea with his team. Here few of the features of Microsoft Teams 2.0 and let’s discuss some of the constraint as well.

Features of Microsoft Teams 2.0

  • Launches the app up to 2X faster.
  • Join meetings up to 2X faster.
  • Switch chats/channels up to 1.7X faster
  • Consume up to 50% less memory.
  • Consume up to 70% less disk space.

Features which are natively available in Microsoft Teams 2.0

  • Activity Feed
  • Chat
  • Calls including regular calls and Teams to Teams Calls
  • Meeting including meeting start notification, custom backgrounds and Power Point Live
  • Teams Channels, including the revised Channel 2.0 Experience.
  • Support for multiple work accounts and Tenant
  • Downloading, uploading, and viewing files as well as the Files tab in Chats and Channels
  • Apps including 1st party apps such as Approvals and Tasks, Microsoft 365 Apps such as Microsoft Viva

Features which are still being worked upon

  • Support for MAC, VDI, EDU and Web Platforms
  • Special Cloud (GCC-High, DoD)
  • Advance Calling Features such as Call Queue and Reverse Number Lookup
  • Advance meeting features such as breakout rooms and 7*7 video
  • Teams and Channel creation, cross-posting, and channel announcements
  • Search in chats and channels
  • Flies App, 3rd Party Apps, Line of Business (LOB)apps.
  • Mention to everyone is Teams Channel
  • Mesh Avatars in Microsoft Teams Calls and Teams Meeting.

Microsoft Teams is not just a UCaaS Platform it is a necessity application and with it missing a most critical features adoption of Teams 2.0 would be less but still people would love the overall experience. Most important aspect would be how soon the development of the basic features can be added to Teams 2.0 application which will be something to look forward.

Coming to how to enable the Teams 2.0 from the Teams Admin Centre. Below are the steps for the same: –

  1. Login as a Teams Administrator into https://admin.teams.microsoft.com
  2. Click on Teams on the left and then Click of Teams Update Policies
  • In the Global Update Policy, we can configure the Teams New Client and control the policy. Accordingly, we can create a New Microsoft Teams Update Policy and assign to the users
  • Once enabled the End Users will see the following option in Microsoft Teams Windows Application. Toggling the Tab will prompt the end user to install the newer version of Microsoft Teams Application.
